Forgetting a cable or a charger can derail a live stream. This checklist covers everything you need to pack, from essential gear to the small items that people forget until it is too late.
Essential equipment
Camera or smartphone with streaming app. Tripod or stable mount. Microphone (external, not built-in). Laptop with OBS Studio installed, or hardware encoder. Ethernet cable (at least 10 metres) or mobile hotspot. Power cables and chargers for every device. HDMI cable if using an external camera.
Recommended extras
Power bank for phone streaming. Extension lead with multiple sockets. Gaffer tape for securing cables. SD card with spare storage. Headphones for monitoring audio. Second phone or tablet for monitoring the stream as a viewer.
Backup gear
A fully charged phone with a streaming app installed as a backup camera. A mobile hotspot in case the venue Wi-Fi fails. Spare batteries for wireless microphones. A printed copy of your RTMP URL and stream key in case you cannot access your email.
Pre-event setup routine
Arrive at least one hour early. Set up your camera and tripod first. Run a speed test. Connect your encoder and start a test stream. Check video framing and audio levels. Buy a test ticket and verify the viewer experience. Then relax and wait for the event to start.
