How to Live Stream a Debate or Quiz

How to stream school debates, quiz competitions, and academic events. Covers camera angles, audio for multiple speakers, and viewer engagement.

Debates, quizzes, and academic competitions are engaging to watch and relatively simple to stream. The small venue, controlled environment, and clear format make them ideal for a straightforward single-camera setup.

Camera setup

A wide shot from the back of the room covering both teams and the moderator is the simplest effective setup. If you have two cameras, alternate between a wide shot and a close-up on whoever is speaking.

For quiz competitions, make sure the score display or quiz master is visible in the frame.

Audio for multiple speakers

Debates involve multiple speakers at different positions. If each speaker has a podium microphone, take a mixed feed from the venue audio system. If not, a boundary microphone on the table or a shotgun microphone pointed at the speaking area captures clear dialogue.

Avoid relying on the camera microphone from across the room. Speech intelligibility drops rapidly with distance.

Making it engaging for viewers

Display the score or running results on screen using a text overlay. This keeps remote viewers informed and engaged. Update after each round or question.

Commentary or a brief introduction at the start helps viewers who are not familiar with the format understand what they are watching.
