How to Live Stream a School Musical

Guide to streaming school musicals and theatre productions. Covers audio from the pit, lighting challenges, copyright, and selling tickets.

School musicals are among the most ambitious and most-watched school events. They combine music, drama, lighting, and staging — all of which need to come through clearly on a live stream. This guide covers the specific challenges.

Audio from the band or pit

If the school has a live band or orchestra in the pit, take a mixed audio feed from the music director desk into your streaming setup. This gives you balanced audio that includes both the band and the vocalists.

If there is no desk mix available, a stereo microphone pair positioned above the audience captures both the stage and the band with reasonable balance.

Stage lighting challenges

Musicals use dramatic lighting changes: blackouts, spotlights, colour washes. Set your camera to manual exposure and expose for the average brightness. Auto exposure will constantly adjust during lighting changes, causing distracting brightness shifts on the stream.

Copyright considerations

Most school musicals are licensed through agencies like Samuel French or Music Theatre International. Check whether your licence includes live streaming rights. If not, you may need to purchase an additional streaming licence.

If streaming rights are not available, stream the drama portions and mute or remove licensed music segments. Inform viewers in advance.
