How to Live Stream an Athletics Event

How to stream athletics, track and field, and cross-country events. Covers multi-event logistics, camera placement, and results integration.

Athletics events present unique streaming challenges: multiple events happening simultaneously across different areas of a track or field. But the audience is there, especially parents at school sports days and supporters at club championships. This guide covers the practical setup.

Prioritising events

You cannot stream everything at once unless you have multiple cameras and multiple streaming feeds. Focus your single camera on the track for running events and switch to field events during gaps.

Alternatively, set up a fixed wide-angle camera covering the main track and use your commentary to direct viewers attention to the relevant part of the frame.

Camera placement for track events

The finish line is the most important angle for track events. Position your camera with a clear view of the finish, slightly elevated if possible. This captures the drama of close finishes and gives viewers a clear result.

For longer races like 800m, 1500m, and cross-country, a camera that can pan to follow the leaders provides a more engaging viewing experience than a static wide shot.

Results and commentary

Commentary is especially valuable in athletics because viewers cannot always see which athlete is which from a distance. Identify athletes by vest colour or number, announce results as they become available, and provide context on personal bests and records.

If official results are published in real time, display them on screen during breaks between events using a text overlay in OBS.
